10 Ways to Lower the Cancer Risk of Grilling
Now that summer is here, BBQ season is sizzling!  This article has some tasty tips on how to make the most of it without overconsuming polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines which are generated when meat is cooked on a grill.  “They have not yet been proven to cause cancer in people, but lab studies have shown they alter DNA in a way that could lead to cancer.”  The good news is that grilled vegetables are unlimited!

Posture impacts how you perceive your food
If you do find yourself at a backyard BBQ being served an overly charred burger, you might want to eat it standing up.  A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research has found that “holding a standing posture for even a few minutes prompts physical stress, muting taste buds”.  Theoretically, by eating standing up, you are less likely to find that the burger tastes all that good and you won’t eat as much of it.  This may be moot if it’s a bacon burger because everything with bacon on it tastes fab!

EWG’s 13th Annual Guide to Sunscreens
While you are out grilling up a storm and otherwise enjoying the sun, remember to slather on sun protection.  But beware that there are some pretty unappetizing options out there.  The Environmental Working Group “assessed more than 1,300 products with SPF… and found that about two-thirds still offer inferior sun protection or contain concerning ingredients, such as oxybenzone, a potentially hormone-disrupting chemical that is readily absorbed by the body.”  Use their guide to find out how your favourite sunscreen ranks and which are the safest and most effective.

103-Year-Old Julia ‘Hurricane’ Hawkins Wins Gold in 100-Meter Dash:  ‘It’s Awe-Inspiring’ to Do This
I love Julia Hawkins’ attitude!  She first started running at age 100, saying that she “thought it’d be neat to run at 100 and do the 100-yard dash”.  What an inspiration and reminder that we can be athletes at any age.

Why Mars is Betting on Personalized Nutrition
You know that healthy eating is gaining momentum when Mars Inc. (maker of the eponymous chocolate bar) now has a dedicated health foods division (Mars Edge).  Yesterday they announced their first investment, acquiring “a majority stake in Foodspring, a direct-to-consumer sports nutrition startup based in Berlin”.  Foodspring has a line of protein shakes, supplements, bars and porridge.  While it may be healthier processed food, it is still processed food.  Fine in a pinch (and much better than scarfing back a Mars Bar) but whole foods will always win the performance enhancement race.
