Surgical Procedure Aims to Delay Menopause
Too late for me but this is a really, really interesting idea.  “The procedure involves removing a portion of a woman’s ovaries and then cryogenically freezing it.  When the woman gets closer to the age of menopause, the tissue is thawed and re-implanted to restore her younger, natural hormones.”  Maybe hot flashes will soon be a thing of the past, rather than a lot of women’s futures!

The Keto Diet Is Popular, but Is it Good for You?
Like all diets, the ketogenic diet has both avid proponents and detractors and this article offers points from both sides.  What I think we fail to distinguish, however, is diet as a therapeutic intervention versus diet as meant by the word’s Greek origin (diaita), which meant way of living.  The ketogenic diet was originally developed to treat children with epilepsy.  And it is garnering some impressive results ameliorating (and sometimes reversing) type 2 diabetes.  That said, carbohydrate foods offer excellent health benefits when consumed whole and in reasonable quantity.  They are also delicious.  So consider the keto diet as a therapeutic intervention for a time if it appeals and makes sense for your personal situation.  But I think a better “way of life” is to include all whole foods in healthy balance – a way of life that is delicious, nutritious and without deprivation.

8 Clever Uses for Coconut Oil (That Are Almost Too Good to Be True)
As the article says, “It’s basically the Instant Pot of ingredients….you can use coconut oil for everything from cooking and cleaning to fighting frizz, less-than-fresh breath, and inflammation.”  My favourite from this is the Homemade Magic Shell:  “melt coconut oil with chocolate in the microwave and let the mixture cool to room temp before drizzling over ice cream. Give it a minute to set, then crack it open with a spoon.”  Mmmm…

The effects of exercise session timing on weight loss…
The full title of this research paper is “The effects of exercise session timing on weight loss and components of energy balance: midwest exercise trial 2” but that was too much of a mouthful for the header.  And while research papers aren’t the easiest to digest, reading them directly averts the sometimes sensationalized interpretations of the media.  And all the deets are available for those who wish to geek out on the science.  The study’s conclusions support the hypothesis that engaging in morning exercise may result in more weight loss compared to engaging in a similar amount of exercise later in the day.  I prefer morning exercise myself but my reasons are more practical than scientific.  I just find that if I do it right away, I do it.  If I wait until later, more often than not I find I run out of time.  That said, exercise at any time of day is better than no exercise.

How to Peel Ginger
The kitchen hack I included in the last issue proved popular so here is another.  Some of you may not already be aware of this brilliant method of peeling ginger using a spoon.  It saves more of the ginger and, more importantly, saves more of your hand than does wielding a paring knife around knobby ginger roots.  But I also like the tip about freezing the ginger for future use.  I threw some in the freezer a while back because I didn’t want to waste it, but then I discovered that grating it with a rasp works much better from the frozen state.  Now I won’t do it any other way!
