Put some Spring in your step with essential oils!

Toronto Holistic Nutritionist Laurie McPhail

While the calendar may have long heralded the advent of Spring in Toronto where I practice, Mother Nature has not…brrrr!!!  By now, like most here, I am pretty tired of the relentlessly chilly temperatures!  And the fact that it has been dragging on so long has been, well, a drag.  So to lift my mood, I’ve turned to one of my favourite remedies, essential oils.

The uses of essential oils are many and miraculous in my opinion.  And I love diffusing them throughout my home.  Both my bedroom and living room host a diffuser – specifically this very sleek, hand-crafted black stone diffuser from Vancouver’s Vitruvi.  I also own pretty much their entire catalogue of essential oils so I’m ready for anything!  Being a science geek, I admit I was drawn to their bottle labels, which are styled after the periodic table.  The black glass bottles are both aesthetically pleasing and they are excellent at protecting the oils from light.  But what I love most about Vitruvi is their steady flow of creative ideas on how to use their oils, like this one…

Essential Oils Spring Awakening Diffuser Cocktail

One of my favourite essential oils is geranium, with its floral and slighty minty aroma – truly springtime in a bottle!  Today I mixed up their Spring Awakening Diffuser Cocktail, a blend of geranium, lemon, spruce and tea tree oils and brought Spring indoors since it’s just not happening outside!   Vitruvi’s marvellous blog offers many such recipes.  You will find everything from these diffuser cocktails to health and beauty ideas (like making your own peppermint mouthwash or using rosemary essential oil to boost your brows).  It also provides ideas for household use (such as making lavender and lemon dryer sheets) and lifestyle tips.  Their blog unfailingly inspires me with simple ways to bring a little lift, luxury and/or love into my life with something as pure and uncomplicated as essential oils.

People often ask how being a holistic nutritionist differs from being a nutritionist.  The long answer is here.  The short answer is that we use more than nutritional choices to help our clients achieve their health goals.  We also offer suggestions for lifestyle modifications.  The use of essential oils to improve mood and reduce stress or as part of a natural beauty routine is just one example.

I hope you try the Spring Awakening Diffuser Cocktail and put some spring in your step by bringing a little Spring into your home!
