The Body: A Guide For Occupants
I am a fan of Bill Bryson and while I was in the UK I came across his newly published book in this review in The Independent. The review highlights 5 astonishing facts from the book about the “warm wobble of flesh” we call our bodies. One of these is that we “cost £96,546.79 to build. Or at least a human of the same dimensions as Benedict Cumberbatch does…” (this is C$164,510.07 at the current conversion rate). The book is “full of enough factoids to drive many a late-night pub conversation”. I just got my copy from the Toronto Public Library, so I’ll see you down at the pub!

Channel 4 launches dedicated menopause policy
I also came across this welcome story in the UK news. “As part of Channel 4’s menopause policy women have access to flexible working arrangements; paid leave if feeling unwell due to menopause symptoms, including the sudden onset of symptoms whilst at work; a private, cool and quiet space; a working environment assessment to ensure that their physical workspace is not making their symptoms worse, and an array of support and guidance resources.” Sounds Utopian to me!

Autumn recipes from Nigel Slater’s new cookbook
Another book I came across while in the UK is Nigel Slater’s Greenfeast: autumn, winter, following on from Greenfeast: spring, summer. Famously describing himself as ‘a cook who writes’, Nigel Slater is one of Britain’s best-loved food writers and presenters. These books are for everyone wanting inspiration for quick plant-based suppers using seasonal ingredients. As Nigel says, “There will be carbs …. Winter is nature’s way of making us eat carbohydrates”.

Chasing the Sun by Linda Geddes review – why we don’t get enough natural light
As the days get shorter, the book published this month by award-winning British science journalist Linda Geddes on the the importance of sunlight is timely. “Chasing the Sun is published with the support of the Wellcome Trust, the UK’s largest non-governmental funder of scientific research, which aims ‘to improve health for everyone by helping great ideas to thrive’. It was written in the wake of the discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm that won researchers the 2017 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine, but other remarkable findings fill its pages.” You can read even more here to find out “why we should be watching the sun, not the clock”.

Top tips to deal with Brexit anxiety
No UK edition of Dishing it Up would be complete without a Brexit story, which is dominating all UK news right now, to the point that Sky News is offering a Brexit-free news channel to offer weary Britons some relief. This comes in the wake of UK reports of mental health deteriorating due to Brexit-related stress. UK charity The Mental Health Foundation offers their top tips to deal with Brexit anxiety. With the Canadian election results imminent and ongoing shenanigans in the U.S., these may prove helpful to North Americans as well!
